Those are the clay I found in Art material shop. I chose the more expensive clay for making the skin as the colour is more accurate and the clay is relatively clean.

(02)Wire armature

IMG_0915.JPG

I tried to make the puppet by with wire armature as wire is cheaper. I designed the structure after reading some references.

I used plastic Hot-melt adhesive, crepe paper, resin clay to make the core.

Then, I put on skin clay, safe the areas for eyes and mouth and go on making the details of the face.

The foot is made by hematite and resin clay and it seems can stand and do a different post without a supporting stand.

The core was not well made so the movement of joints is not smooth and distorted.

About Hair

IMG_1113_edited.jpg

My character has long hair, It was hard to maintain if it is made of clay. It will break easily, and I think it may affect the animate of body movement, so I decided to use cotton thread for the hair.

This is the base of the hair which can avoid seeing a large amount of sink through the hair

IMG_1452.jpg

This is the first test for hair. I just made it from my imagination and without any paper draft, therefore the boundary line of each layer of hair is abnormal.

IMG_1572_edited.jpg

Some layers need to made according to the hairstyle. I stuck the roots of the hair in “U” shape to form a bang.

After the hair experiment, I made a design on the layers and boundary of hair.

IMG_1555.jpg

Still, I used double-sided tape to make hair layers. The root of the cotton thread was stuck along the tape.

Each layer of hair has a different length. I iron them and put it on the side of the table to keep it straight. The last version is curved and messy.

Covering the hair by the plastic paper to fix the shape.

(03)Ball & socket armature

Ball and socket armature is more professional and it should be easier for animate. I designed the structure after reading some references.

Buying things in Taobao is quite exhausting, especially when I found out the Shop A lied to me and he never delivers the product that I had paid for it a month ago. In the end, I bought from Shop B and retrieve my 290 dollars.

I bought 2 types of hand from Shop B. The wrist of the second one is connected by a ball which should have a better movement. But I did not use either of them as the wire finger is too hard for soft clay.

The seller wanted to give me this cheaper gear at the beginning, but I found out and he changed to the triangle one.

I chose those pelvis core because of the small size. Shop A one can match a better joint but the Shop B one has higher plasticity on the pelvis.

The joins from shop A is better as one side of the ball will be locked automatically therefore the tightness of joint will only affect the movable ball which means it is easier to set the tightness.

I need to lock the joint by resin clay and is incontinent to change tightness.

Testing the armature movement put on clay skin and put them inside a plastic box to prevent dust.

Hands are made separately. The fingers may break easily so I need to make more for spares.

I use a day to learn using Dragonframe.

The photo quality was so bad even I have set to save images in fine JPEG.

When I tried to shoot shot2, the puppet felt 3 times and her face was damaged. I wasted so much time on fixing it. In the end, I let her sit down and take shot 4~7.

Nevertheless, the body was still cannot prevent the damages from each movement. And the body was covered by cotton thread. Unmovable smudge.

(07)More

Since the clay skin of Any is fragile, I want to change it to another material-- soft silica gel

Soft silica gel

Gypsum

Lego

I need these three items to make the new skin. The failure of transaction deal to COVID-19 forced me to cancel the plan.

Hope you like it......

Have Fun!
